1.  Overpacking

Leave room in your schedule to explore at your own pace, some of the most rewarding travel experiences are a result of wandering through a new neighborhood or stumbling upon a local attraction you were not aware of.

Inform yourself about what common scams you may encounter, and stay vigilant in crowded areas where pickpocketing is common.  Do not accept any “free” trinkets and be wary of strangers on the street asking you to sign something.  Never give a stranger any personal information.

Many religious sites require a certain level of modesty in order to enter.  Upscale dining establishments also may require a dress code.

Local sim cards are very affordable or arrange for an international data plan while you are away with your cellular provider to avoid high roaming costs.

21.  Not Bringing Backup Copies:

Be sure to pack photocopies or digital copies of your important documents such as train tickets, reservations confirmations, passports and health or medication directives.  

22.  Remaining Respectful:

Although you are on vacation, you are visiting someone else’s home, so treat local property with respect, dispose of trash appropriately and abide by the local laws.

Be sure to print out physical copies of the names and address of where you are staying and other important travel documents in case your phone is stolen or you are separated from your travel group.

Especially important during the hot summer months, stay hydrated as you explore.  Water bottles are inexpensive and can be found at most markets.  Or bring your own reusable bottle from home, many cities offer clean water from free fountains.

Many cities are notorious for pickpocketing, avoid becoming a target by dressing discreetly.

Ensure you account for enough time in your itinerary for traveling by air, train or bus between destinations.  Although usually very reliable there can be travel delays when using trains or airlines.
